Parliament Agrees to Set up Group on Property Rights
The ruling majority and opposition in the Parliament have agreed to set up an inter-faction group to develop a bill that will provide additional guarantees for the protection of property rights in Georgia.
The agreement was reached as a result of ?intensive? and ?constructive? work carried out jointly by the opposition and the ruling majority, Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze said on February 27.
Previously, there was disagreement between the opposition and the ruling party about the format of the group – the opposition was insisting that a special parliamentary investigative group be set up with the authority to probe into concrete cases of reported abuse of property rights by the authorities, but lawmakers from the ruling party were against this. As a result of a compromise reached between the sides, members of the inter-faction group will have the right to individually probe into concrete cases, but the main task of the group will be to develop additional guarantees for the protection of property rights.
?There have been some question marks regarding property rights in Georgia, and all of these question should be answered? Both a citizen of Georgia and a foreign investor should have a 100% guarantee that property rights will be untouchable and secured,? Nino Burjanadze, who will chair the inter-faction group, said at the parliamentary session on February 27.
