Sokhumi Plans to Participate in Geneva Talks

A delegation from Abkhazia will participate in the UN-led Georgian-Abkhaz talks in Geneva, Apsnipress news agency quoted Abkhaz Foreign Minister Sergey Shamba as saying on February 7.

He said that the decision was made at a session of the Security Council of the breakaway region.

On February 6 Abkhaz leader Sergey Bagapsh did not rule out the possibility of boycotting the talks against the background of Tbilisi?s attempts to destabilize the situation in the Gali District of Abkhazia.

The Georgian-Abkhaz negotiations are scheduled for February 12-13 under the aegis of the UN Secretary General’s Group of Friends on Georgia, which brings together diplomats from Germany, France, Great Britain, Russia and the United States.

According to Apsnipress, the Abkhaz side decided to participate in the UN-led talks because of the necessity to brief the Group of Friends and the international community on Georgia?s actions aimed at aggravating the situation in the Abkhaz conflict zone.
