Saakashvili Meets Ruling Party Officials
President Saakashvili met key figures from his ruling National Movement party on January 27, reportedly to discuss issues related with local self-governance bodies.
?We are planning to initiate a draft law that will envisage the investment of at least 50% of the funds transferred to local self-governance bodies from the state budget into social programs. At least half of the local authorities? spending should be directed towards development and social programs, involving roads, hospitals and schools,? Saakashvili said.
He charged Vice-Speaker of the Parliament Mikheil Machavariani with a task to oversee development of the new draft law.
President Saakashvili also said that there are several cases of misuse of state funds in local self-governance bodies.
?The National Movement party?s strength is in our ability to punish officials among us. We have never covered up wrongdoings, even those of our allies,? Saakashvili said.
