Russian Diplomat: No Date Set for Resuming Visas for Georgians

Russia is considering resuming issuing visas to Georgian citizens but no date is fixed yet Russian diplomat Ivan Volynkin told Interfax news agency on January 10.

Volynkin is among the few diplomats who remained in the Russian Embassy in Tbilisi after Moscow recalled its Ambassador and evacuated its embassy staff after spy row erupted with Georgia in late September.

Georgian media sources reported that Russia plans to resume issuing visas in Tbilisi on January 12.

?Although there are plans to resume issuing visas, the question remains when? We act in accordance to the instructions from the Russian Foreign Ministry and we know nothing about January 12, which is speculated by the local [Georgian] media sources to be the date of resuming issuing visas,? Interfax quoted Volynkin as saying.

Russia stopped issuing visas to Georgian citizens on September 28, the day after Georgian law enforcers arrested four Russian military officers on spying charges. All of them were handed over to Russia on October 2.
