Bagapsh Wants to Launch Moscow-Sokhumi Air Link

Sokhumi is in talks with Moscow over launching air traffic between the two cities, Abkhaz leader Sergey Bagapsh said in an interview posted on his official web-site on December 20.

He said that Russian specialists have already inspected the infrastructure of the Babushera airport near Sokhumi and confirmed that it is ready to start functioning.

Starting flights to and from Babushera airport will be ?a major step towards ending Abkhazia?s economic blockade,? Bagapsh said.

Acting head of the Georgian transport regulation agency Alexander Chkhikvadze said launching air traffic between Sokhumi and Moscow without Tbilisi?s permission would be a violation of Georgia?s sovereignty and international standards.

The Abkhaz leader also said that Sokhumi also wants to resume ferry traffic with Turkey in the near future.
