Sokhumi Seeks Peace Agreement with Tbilisi
Sokhumi is ready to sign a peace agreement with Tbilisi under international guarantees, Abkhaz leader Sergey Bagapsh said while addressing the Abkhaz-Abazian Congress in Sokhumi.
?The international community, particularly the UN Security Council and the Russian Federation, should act as guarantors for the non-resumption of hostilities between Georgia and Abkhazia,? the Abkhaz leader?s web site quoted Bagapsh as saying.
Sergey Bagapsh said that relations with Tbilisi should move to a new stage and “in the case of signing an agreement, Georgia should reject using force or any methods of political and economic pressure.”
At the same time, the Abkhaz leader stressed that the status of Abkhazia, ?as of a sovereign state? should not be revised.
He also noted that Sokhumi is trying to launch a civilized dialogue with Tbilisi, but the Georgian side constantly thwarts the negotiating process.
Up to 600 representatives of the Abkhaz community from 31 countries participated in the Abkhaz-Abazian Congress, which opened in Sokhumi on December 15, according to Apsnypress news agency.
