Council under Putin Condemns Anti-Georgian Campaign
A human rights and civil society development council under Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned on November 8 an anti-Georgian campaign in Russia, warning that Georgians are still being descriminated against in Russia despite Putin?s criticism of a ?selective approach? while fighting crime.
?This [anti-Georgian] campaign is the result of a distorted understanding of political statements made by the country?s leadership in respect to Russian-Georgian tensions, which were perceived at lower levels as an instruction to track down persons with ethnic Georgian backgrounds,? the council said in a statement.
?The anti-Georgian campaign and its methods are having a negative influence on the relations between our [Russian and Georgian] peoples, are damaging the image of Russia and its judiciary… represent unacceptable discrimination, and cannot be considered as a lawful method of combating illegal migration,? the statement said.
