Georgia Says Russia Infringes its Sovereignty
The Georgian Foreign Ministry said on July 20 that recent statements of the Russian top-level officials about readiness to protect its citizens in Georgia?s conflict zones is an interference in the country?s internal affairs and called on the international community ?to protect independence and territorial integrity of Georgia.?
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told the daily Kommersant that Russia will protect our citizens and peacekeepers ?with all available means.?
?The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia assesses such actions as rough violation of fundamental norms of international law, including the UN Charter, whose Article 4 states that ?All Members shall refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations,? the Georgian Foreign Ministry said.
?The Georgian side, if necessary, shall take all measures in order to prevent infringement of the sovereignty of the country.?
