Human Right Groups to Rally over High-Profile Murder Trial

Georgian human right activists plan to hold a protest rally outside the Tbilisi City Court on July 6 to call on the judiciary for fair trial over a high-profile murder case of Sandro Girgvliani.

The court is expected to announce a verdict on Thursday as prosecutors demanded nine-year imprisonment for key suspect into the case and eight-year imprisonment for each of three other suspects, who are former officers of the Interior Ministry?s Department for Constitutional Security.

Relatives of Sandro Girgvliani, who was found dead in outskirts of Tbilisi on January 28, as well as some human right groups and opposition parties accused the court of biased trial, which aimed at covering up of those details of the crime, which would have proven involvement of top-level officials of the Interior Ministry in the case.

Opposition political parties are also expected to join the rally outside the Tbilisi City Court.
