Secessionist Leaders Meet in Sokhumi

During a meeting in the Abkhaz capital Sokhumi on June 13 leaders of three breakaway regions ? Abkhazia, South Ossetia, and Transdnestria ? discussed those documents which will be signed during a summit on June 14, the Apsnipress news agency reported.

The first document, which will be signed by the Abkhaz, South Ossetian, and Transdnestrian leaders – Sergey Bagapsh, Eduard Kokoity and Igor Smirnov, respectively ? will voice support for the Russian peacekeeping operations in these three regions, Foreign Minister of breakaway Abkhazia Sergey Shamba said.

The second document will be a joint declaration on the principles of the future relationship between the three unrecognized republics.

Establishment of an ?interstate association? of these three unrecognized republics was also discussed during the meeting between Bagapsh, Kokoity, and Smirnov on June 13.

?But we decided not to hurry in this regard? This organization will be established when there are the appropriate preconditions,? Abkhaz Foreign Minister Shamba said.

Abkhaz leader Sergey Bagapsh noted during the meeting that all three regions want ?peace and independence.?

He also said that there are no plans yet about setting up of a military alliance between Abkhazia, South Ossetia, and Transdnestria, according to Apsnipress.

?We want to solve all the issues through negotiations,? Bagapsh told reporters after the meeting.

He also said that a joint policy in respect to relations with Russia was also discussed during the meeting.

This meeting of secessionist leaders has coincided with top-level talks between the Russian and Georgian Presidents, Vladimir Putin and Mikheil Saakashvili, respectively, which are scheduled to occur late on June 13 in St. Petersburg.
