Military Service Delay Fee to Increase 10-Fold
The Georgian Parliamentary Committee for Defense and Security is considering an initiative to increae a 200-Lari payment for postponement of compulsory military service by tenfold.
According to the draft law, a conscript under the age 25 can postpone his military service after paying GEL 2000 (approximately USD 1120) instead of current the GEL 200 (approximately USD 112). But a conscript can apply this rule only twice. The term of compulsory military service is 18 months.
The members of the Parliamentary Committee for Defense and Security from the ruling National Movement party say that the ?prestige of the Georgian army? has increased; hence the military service delay fee should also be increased.
Payment for delaying military service was introduced in Georgia in 2002.
