Police Code of Conduct Proposed
On May 29 officials and civil society representatives will discuss a draft Police Code of Conduct – a set of guidelines laying out how the police should act and behave.
The Code of Conduct was developed by the influential non-governmental organization Liberty Institute and the Association of Public and Legal Advice (ALPE), in cooperation with the Interior Ministry.
Akaki Minashvili of the Liberty Institute says that although an existing law outlines police conduct principles, the Code of Conduct will be a more detailed document, which will be yet another tool to increase police responsibility.
Recently, the law enforcement agencies, especially the Interior Ministry, have become the target of fierce criticism from civil society groups and opposition parties for, according to these critics, increasing police violence and frequent use of excessive force during police operations in the country.
