Georgia Plans Reforms in General Staff
The Georgian Parliament endorsed on May 11 the creation of a 12-member commission, which will coordinate public discussions over constitutional amendments regarding the implemention of reforms at the General Staff of Armed Forces of Georgia.
The commission is led by Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee for Defense and Security Givi Targamadze. It also incorporates Defense Minister Irakli Okruashvili, as well as the representatives of the parliamentary majority and the opposition.
According to the draft, constitutional amendments over implementing reforms at the General Staff will abolish the acting General Staff and a United Staff will be set up instead, which should promote the coordination of the staff activities of the Armed Forces.
Moreover, the proposed amendments should foster the process of Georgia’s integration into NATO.
