MPs to Probe into Controversial Police Operation
Georgian Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze instructed the Parliamentary Committees for Legal Issues and Human Rights to study the issue of the use of excessive force by police during recent operations.
“You should study how adequate the use of force by the police was, whether it was possible to avoid using this force, whether it was possible not to hold such operations in crowded places,” Burjanadze said while commenting on the recent police operation in downtown Tbilisi on May 2, which resulted in the death of two criminal suspects and the injury of one other.
“If the operation was fulfilled at a professional level, we will say nothing. But if there were some flaws, we should tell our law enforcement agencies to avoid such actions in the future,” the Parliamentary Chairperson said.
