Russia Bans Nabeghlavi Mineral Water

One day after banningthe  import of Borjomi mineral water, Russian chief sanitary inspector banned the import of another Georgian mineral water brand Nabeghlavi on May 5, the Russian consumer protection agency reported on May 6.

In a letter sent to the Russian customs service, chief sanitary inspector Genady Onishchenko, who chairs the consumer protection agency, said that he will revoke Nabeghlavi’s safety certificates starting from May 10.

100% of the 175,560 bottles of Nabeghlavi which were inspected failed to meet standards in the Moscow region, the Russian consumer protection agency said.

The Russian consumer protection agency banned the import of Georgia’s most prominent mineral water Borjomi on May 4, five weeks after banning the import of Georgian wines and spirits.

“When one day Russian citizens wake up and find out that they can not have Borjomi any more, they will be very upset with their government,” Georgian President Saakashvili told reporters on May 6. He made a reference to the fact that many regard Borjomi as a hangover cure.
