Commission on Judicial Reform Set up
A 13-member governmental commission was set up by decree of Prime Minister Zurab Nogaideli of April 26 in an attempt to foster reforms in the country’s judiciary system.
The commission, which is chaired by the PM, unites Finance Minister Lexo Alexishvili, State Minister for Euro-Atlantic Integration Giorgi Baramidze, Foreign Minister Gela Bezhuashvili, Education Minister Kakha Lomaia, Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili, Justice Minister Gia Kavtaradze and his five deputies, as well as the government’s parliamentary secretary Gia Khuroshvili. General-Prosecutor Zurab Adeishvili will also participate in the commission’s activities, according to the decree.
The commission was also instructed to invite foreign and local experts “in cases of necessity.”
President Saakashvili said on April 17 that a governmental commission will be set up to foster judicial reforms and called on civil society organizations, political parties, and international experts to participate in its activities.
