Georgian, Chinese Presidents Discuss Cooperation

Visiting Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili held talks with his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao in Beijing on April 11 to discuss bilateral relations, as well as international and regional problems, the Chinese news agency Xinhua reported on April 11.


During the talks, the Chinese President expressed his country’s readiness to expand economic cooperation with Georgia, adding that the Chinese government would encourage Chinese companies to increase investment in Georgia.


“We support each other in major issues, such as state independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and pay huge attention to the development of healthy and stable relations of friendship and cooperation,” Xinhua news agency quotes the Chinese President as saying.


He also offered to maintain consultations with Georgia on key issues of UN affairs, the fight against terrorism, cross-border crime, separatism and extremism to maintain and safeguard world and regional peace and stability.


In response, Saakashvili expressed his hope that the cooperation would turn the two countries into “reliable and good partners.”


Following the talks the two Presidents signed a joint statement on the further development of friendship and cooperation, according to Xinhua. 


On April 12 President Saakashvili will participate in the Georgian-Chinese Economic Forum.
