Burjanadze: Opposition’s Boycott will not Help to Solve Problems

Georgian Parliamentary Chair Nino Burjanadze said on April 10 that boycotting parliamentary sessions and bureau sittings “is not a way of cooperation that will lead to solving problems.”

Burjanadze was speaking at the parliamentary bureau sitting – the body which draws up the Parliament’s weekly agenda.

Lawmakers from the New Rights, Industrialists and Democratic Front (uniting MPs from Republican and Conservative parties) signed a memorandum saying that they refuse to attend the parliamentary session and parliamentary bureau sittings unless the authorities meet their demands, including the resignation of Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili, the creation of new election administrations by political parties on a parity basis and direct elections of city mayors and regional governors. The memorandum was sent to the President and the Parliamentary Chairperson.

“It is absolutely natural when the minority puts forth its position; however, the decisions are made by the majority,” Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze said.

She also said that “language of ultimatums” will not contribute to a constructive dialogue between the opposition and the authorities.
