NATO Discusses Implementation of Georgia’s IPAP

A document assessing the implementation of the Individual Partnership Action Plan with NATO by the Georgian authorities was discussed at NATO headquarters on April 3 and featured the participation of Georgian Deputy Defense Minister Mamuka Kudava, the Georgian Defense Ministry reported.

The North Atlantic Council is scheduled to discuss the document on April 13 with the participation of Georgian Foreign Minister Gela Bezhuashvili, Defense Minister Irakli Okruashvili and State Minister for Euro-Atlantic Integration Issues Giorgi Baramidze, according to the Georgian Defense Ministry.

President Saakashvili said in an interview published by the Russian newspaper Vremya Novostey on April 4 that Georgia’s NATO inspirations “are not directed against anyone.”

“We are told: ‘choose either NATO or Russia.’ We say: ‘we will be with you and with Europe simultaneously,’” Saakashvili said.

“Georgia will feel safer and democracy will be more protected [if Georgia gains NATO membership]… I am optimistic. I think the issue of [Georgia’s NATO] membership will be solved in the shortest period of time; during my first presidential term [before 2009],” Saakashvili said.
