Burjanadze: ‘External Forces’ Behind Akhalkalaki Riot
Georgian Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze said on March 13 that the recent incident in the town of Akhalkalaki in Samtskhe-Javakheti region, when a couple of hundred of protesters stormed a local court chamber and a building of the Tbilisi State University’s Akhalkalaki branch on March 11, were provoked by “external forces.”
“It is obvious that there are serious forces, who try to trigger destabilization in this region. There are serious forces, who try to confront the Georgian and non-Georgian population. I am deeply sure that both Georgian and non-Georgian population will do its best not to yield to provocations and avoid any split in the country,” Burjanadze said.
While commenting on a clash in Tsalka, Kvemo Kartli region, on March 9 which resulted into death of Gevork Gevorkian, 24, and injury of four other young men, the Parliamentary Chairperson said that “all the questions should be answered and the guilty should be punished.”
