Chief Russian Peacekeeper: Officers’ Detention is a Provocation
Commander of the Joint Peacekeeping Forces stationed in the South Ossetian conflict zone Maj. Gen. Marat Kulakhmetov said that the recent detention of three Russian military officers in the Georgian village of Kurta, in the South Ossetian conflict zone, is “a provocation.”
The Georgian law enforcers detained the Russian officers on February 8, citing that they had no Georgian entry visas.
“In recent days the Georgian side has created artificial problems… I think that this incident is a rough provocation by the Georgian side,” Kulakhmetov said in the interview with Channel One of the Russian television on February 9.
He also confirmed that the Russian peacekeepers have reinforced their checkpoints in the South Ossetian conflict zone.
