Russia Steps up Security of Energy Facilities in North Caucasus

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered chief of the Federal Security Service (FSB) Anatoly Patrushev to heighten security at energy facilities in the North Caucasus after two pipelines in North Ossetia and a high-voltage power line in Karachaevo-Cherkessia were blown up on Sunday, the Interfax news agency reported on January 23.

Putin said, while meeting with Russian cabinet members on Monday, that an investigation into the explosion cases is underway and urged Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliev to assist the General Prosecutor?s Office in this investigation.
