Four Judges Sacked
Judicial Discipline Commission of the Council of Justice ruled on December 26 that four judges of the Supreme Court – Nino Gvenetadze, Merab Turava, Tamar Laliashvili and Murman Isaev, should be dismissed for misconduct.
Judge of the Supreme Court Davit Sulakvelidze was reprimand by the Commission for misconduct.
Three out of these five judges – Nino Gvenetadze, Merab Turava and Davit Sulakvelidze, have been named by the Georgian media as “rebel judges” after they have publicly spoken out against persisting pressure on the judiciary coming from the authorities, in particular the General Prosecutor’s Office, Chairman of Supreme Court and Chairman of the Council of Justice.
Sacked judges deny misconduct, incriminated against them, and claim that this was a punishment for publicly voicing criticism towards the executive authorities.
