MPs Vote Down Move to Impeach Finance Minister

The Georgian Parliament voted against an initiative put forth by the opposition faction Democratic Front regarding the launch of impeachment procedures against Finance Minister Lekso Alexishvili on December 9.

26 MPs, including three parliamentarians from the ruling National Movement party, supported this initiative at the Parliament?s session.

Koba Davitashvili, one of the leaders of the Democratic Front, set in motion this initiative to impeach the Finance Minister because of the latter’s failure to keep an earlier promise to increase salaries for teachers up to GEL 115.

The Finance Minister was criticized by some parliamentarians from the ruling party, including deputy chairman of the parliamentary majority Davit Kirkitadze, on December 6 for Lekso Alexishvili?s ?negligence? at the parliamentary committee hearings. Alexishvili was also criticized for not increasing funding for the Border Guard Department.

The Finance Ministers was also slammed by MP from the ruling party Davit Kirkitadze on December 6 for neglecting a demand by the parliamentarians to increase financing for the Georgian Border Guard Department. But, at the parliamentary session on December 9 MP Kirkitadze said that there was no grounds for the Finance Minister?s dismissal.
