MP Attack Suspect Arrested

Georgian Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili announced on September 27 that the police arrested a person who is suspected of attacking parliamentarian Tamaz Kacheishvili and stealing his car. Merabishvili said that the police failed to recover the stolen car because it is currently in Tskhinvali, the capital of breakaway South Ossetia.


Tamaz Kacheishvili, a parliamentarian from the opposition New Rights-Industrialists faction, was attacked and beaten up by unknown men late on August 23 in Tbilisi. Then the attackers took him to Mtskheta, a town near Tbilisi, tied him to a tree and stole the MP?s car.


At a news conference on September 27, Minister Merabishvili said that the Georgian MP?s car, now fitted with with Ossetian number plates, is currently owned by Mikheil Tskhovrebov, a resident of Tskhinvali.


?Tskhovrebov is currently in Tskhinvali, We know his whereabouts. We have informed our Ossetian colleagues and provided them with all the information and demand they hand over of this person,? Merabishvili said, adding that Tskhovrebov is suspected of trading stolen cars.
