Lithuania Hails Ukrainian-Georgian Initiative over Democratic Alliance
President of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus welcomed a proposal by Georgian and Ukrainian Presidents Mikheil Saakashvili and Viktor Yushchenko over the creation of a regional alliance of democratic nations.
The proposal on a “Community for Democratic Choice” was reflected in a joint declaration signed by the two Presidents in Georgia?s resort town of Borjomi on August 12.
The Lithuanian President said in a statement issued through an official web-site on August 16 that ?Cooperation between the states of the Baltic and Black Sea regions has great prospects. Hence, I welcome the new democratic initiative of the Georgian and Ukrainian leaders, which, I hope will become a powerful incentive for the elimination of dividing lines in this region, solve conflicts, prevent the violation of human rights and create opportunities for a new era of democracy, security, stability and long-term peace.?
Adamkus also said that he will personally discuss the initiative with the Georgian and Ukrainian Presidents.
According to the Borjomi declaration the Ukrainian and Georgian leaders propose to convene a regional conference in Ukraine this autumn to discuss the democratic alliance initiative .
