Storm Delays Removal of Military Hardware from Batumi Base
Two Russian amphibious assault ships that were to transport military hardware from Russia?s military base is Batumi, failed to dock at the shoreline of the Adjara Autonomous Republic due to bad weather at sea.
Deputy Commander of the Headquarters of the Russian Troops in the Trans Caucasus Col. Vladimir Kuparadze told reporters on August 11 that the equipment may be shipped out no sooner than August 12.
A total of 40 armored vehicles, including 20 tanks, as well as 3 Shilka self propelled anti-aircraft guns and 12 Krug anti-aircraft missile systems are to be withdrawn from the Batumi base at this stage of the pullout process.
According to the agreement reached by the Georgian and Russian Foreign Ministers in Moscow on May 30, at least 40 armored vehicles, including no less than 20 tanks, are to be withdrawn from the bases in Batumi and Akhalkalaki by September 1, 2005.
