Russia Ships Military Hardware from Batumi Base
Two Russian amphibious assault ships docked at the shoreline of the Adjara Autonomous Republic on August 10 to transport military hardware from the base in Batumi to Russia.
Russian and Georgian media sources reported that a total of 40 armored vehicles, including 20 tanks, as well as 3 Shilka self propelled anti-aircraft guns and 12 Krug anti-aircraft missile systems will be withdrawn from the Batumi base at this stage of the pullout process. But the process might be delayed because of a bad weather condition in Adjara.
According to the agreement reached by the Georgian and Russian Foreign Ministers in Moscow on May 30, at least 40 armored vehicles, including no less than 20 tanks, are to be withdrawn from the bases in Batumi and Akhalkalaki by September 1, 2005. The entire withdrawal process should be finished by 2008.
