Republican Party Elects New Leader

Congress of the opposition Republican Party elected on June 27 Davit Usupashvili as the new Chairman replacing MP Davit Berdzenishvili, who led the party since 2000.

“Creation of a strong party infrastructure and organization, as well as establishment of a party discipline and turning from the “club of intellectuals” into a real party organization will be my short-term goal. In a short-term period we will also seek to succeed in MP by-elections. And in a long-term period our goal is taking over the power. a presidential election is not our political target, as we advocate parliamentary republic,” Davit Usupashvili told Civil Georgia on June 27.

In April, when Usupashvili received an award from an influential group of the Georgian non-governmental organizations for his contribution in development of the civil society organizations in Georgia he said that this award was for him “a symbolic farewell” to the NGO sector.
