Paper: Sokhumi Cautious over Railway Reopening

Georgian daily 24 Saati (24 Hours) reported on June 24 that the project envisaging reopening of the railway between Georgia and Russia via breakaway Abkhazia is most likely to trigger controversy in the Abkhaz society.

?It is clear that the Abkhaz opposition, which is taking more and more hard line stance towards the Georgian side, will use this project [on resumption of railway] as a reason for mounting criticism on the authorities,? the 24 Hours reported.

According to the newspaper, the Abkhaz opposition recommends the government to agree on joint economic projects with the Georgian side if only Tbilisi signs a binding treaty on non-resumption of hostilities.

The Abkhaz side is also against of linking the issue of resumption of railway with the return of the Georgian internally displaced persons in Abkhazia.

Railway connection between the Abkhaz capital Sokhumi and Moscow operates since 2004.
