Georgian Soldier Injured in Iraq
One Georgian soldier was badly injured in Iraq on May 24 as a result of a mine explosion, while a convoy of Georgian and U.S. troops was heading from Baghdad to Bakuba, the Georgian Defense Ministry reported.
According to the Defense Ministry injuries sustained by the soldier, whose name is not yet reported, required that his leg be amputated.
A total of eight Georgian servicemen have been injured in Iraq since August, 2003, when Georgia first started to contribute to coalition forces in Iraq.
Currently, Georgia has about 850 of its elite troops in Iraq and represents one of the most significant contributors to the coalition forces in terms of a country’s per capita troop deployment.
