Georgian President Comments on Belarus
President Saakashvili said on May 17 in Warsaw, where he participated in the Council of Europe Summit, that Georgia, which has undertaken a ?democratic mission,? is obliged to speak about the situation in Belarus.
?Previously there was an unwritten law that CIS member states should not speak about each other. Of course we respect these rules, but protection of democracy and liberty is our key rule. This is a principled issue,? Saakashvili said.
Saakashvili spoke about Belarus during his address to the Council of Europe Summit on May 16 and said that the people of Belarus are ?in the captivity? of President Alexander Lukashenko?s regime. He called on the international community to assist the Belarussian in building an open and democratic state.
