State Minister, CoE Secretary General Discussed Conflicts
State Minister for Conflict Resolution Issues Goga Khaindrava met with visiting Secretary General of the Council of Europe Terry Davis on April 15 and discussed conflict resolution issues, as well as Georgia?s commitment to repatriating deported Meskhetian Turks.
Terry Davis told reporters after the talks that the State Minister briefed him over the details of the existing situation in the Abkhaz and South Ossetian conflict zones. Goga Khaindrava told reporters that he emphasized the issue of protecting human rights in the predominately Georgian-populated Gali district of breakaway Abkhazia.
The issue of repatriation of deported Meskhetian Turks, which is one of the commitments Georgia undertook when it joined the CoE in 1999, was also discussed. State Minister Goga Khaindrava chairs the governmental commission which has recently been set up to work over this problem.
