Civil Society Organizations Send Open Letter to Saakashvili

The representatives of the Georgian civil society organizations sent an open letter to President Saakashvili on April 5, offering him to take particular measures before implementation of the Georgian government?s initiatives with respect to the peaceful resolution of the conflict in South Ossetia.

?This will make the process of thawing of mistrust among the Ossetian people irreversible,? reads the open letter undersigned by about 25 non-governmental organizations, experts and politicians.

The authors of the open letter claim, that the Georgian authorities should give political estimation to the armed conflict in 1990-92 and sporadic clashes between the Georgian troops and Ossetian militias that occurred last August.

The Georgian side should also adopt a Law on Property Restitution for each family which suffered during the 1990-1992 armed conflict before launching the implementation of peace initiatives.

?And finally, the Georgian government?s initiative should be delivered to the South Ossetian de facto authorities within the frames of the Joint Control Commission or bilateral relations,? the open letter reads.

?We are sure that these proposals will promote the implementation of the government?s peace initiatives.?
