Abkhaz Public Movements, Parties Condemn Attack Against PM
Several influential Abkhaz political movements and parties expressed concern on April 2 regarding the assassination attempt against the breakaway region?s Prime Minister Alexander Ankvab by saying that those behind the terrorist act ?are against reforms and changes which will put an end to criminals and lawlessness [in the region].?
The statement was signed by representatives of Amtsakhara, Aitaira, United Abkhazia and the Federation of Independent Professional Unions.
Ankvab survived the second assassination attempt against him in the past two months, when unknown gunmen opened fire on his convoy in the outskirts of the Abkhaz capital Sokhumi late on April 1. Neither the PM, nor de facto Vice Premier Leonid Lakerbaia, who was accompanying Ankvab, was injured. Their driver, however, was wounded as a result of the attack.
