Saakashvili: Tbilisi Offers ‘Concrete’ Plan for S.Ossetia

President Saakashvili said on March 29 that Tbilisi’s proposal over settlement of the South Ossetian conflict has triggered a lot of positive feedback from many ethnic Ossetians.

“In regards to Tskhinvali [breakaway South Ossetia’s capital] we have a very concrete plan. We have translated this plan into the Ossetian language and published it on the [Georgian] President’s official web-site. There is a lot of positive feedback from Ossetians regarding this plan… and this is a step forward,” Saakashvili said at a news conference.

On March 24 the official web-site of the Georgian President’s administration published the document – Initiatives of the Georgian Government with Respect to the Peaceful Resolution of the Conflict in South Ossetia – which is Tbilisi’s proposal regarding the status of breakaway South Ossetia within the Georgian state and is based on the initiatives voiced by President Saakashvili duing his address to the Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe on January 26.

But Special Affairs Minister of breakaway South Ossetian rejected this plan on March 29 and said: “we still do not accept Tbilisi’s proposals over South Ossetia’s status as an autonomous republic within the Georgian state. South Ossetia considers itself an independent state.”
