Opposition Urges Government to Set up Anti-Terrorism Structure

The New Rights-Industrialist opposition coalition called on the government, on February 2, to create a special structure which will tackle terrorism threats.

?I want to ask the authorities: don?t they think that it was too early to abolish the Security Ministry? I call on the government to allocate serious funds to set up a special state agency designed to prevent terrorism in the country,? MP David Gamkrelidze, who leads the New Rights-Industrialists parliamentary faction, said at a news conference on February 2.

?I believe that our partner countries will spare no effort or finances to ensure the effective performance of this agency,? the Georgian MP said.

In a televised address to the nation on February 1, in the wake of a deadly blast in Gori, President Mikheil Saakashvili called the society and all political forces to support the government?s anti-terrorist measures.

?I want your support and understanding to solve those issues which are related to our fight against terrorism, related to the anti-terrorism structures, to the anti-terrorism legislation and also related to the overall security of the society,? said President Saakashvili said during his address.

However, the President did not specify exactly what kind of measures the authorities plan to undertake, or whether the government intends to propose any new anti-terrorism legislation.
