Breakaway Abkhazia Seeks for Full Independence

The Foreign Ministry of the unrecognized Republic of Abkhazia claims that recognition of Abkhazia?s independence is very important to achieve peace and stability in the region.

“In the long-term perspective, recognition of Abkhazia’s independence will be more important for regional stability than attempts to integrate Abkhazia with Georgia, that, at the current stage of Georgian-Abkhaz relations, would only spark another fierce conflict,” the statement issued by the de facto Foreign Ministry on January 24 reads.

The de facto Foreign Ministry considers more efficient ?to move from the issue of Abkhazia?s political status to the issues of economic cooperation and development of transport and social infrastructure.?    

The Abkhaz Foreign Ministry appeals to the participants of the Georgian-Abkhaz negotiations to take into account the position of Abkhazia while developing the concepts on such important issues as the fate of Abkhazian people. 

The statement was issued just before Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili?s visit to Strasbourg, where he is anticipated to unveil the peace plans on Abkhazia and South Ossetia conflict resolution at a session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe on January 26.
