North Ossetian Leader Proposes ‘Favorable Economic Zone’ in South Ossetia

President of Russia’s North Ossetia Alexandre Dzasokhov said on November 20, while speaking at a session of the Joint Control Commission (JCC) in Vladikavkaz, that the creation of a “favorable economic zone” in Georgia’s breakaway South Ossetia may help the settlement of the South Ossetian conflict, RIA Novosti news agency reports.
 
“From the northern side, the border of the most favorable economic zone may lie across the Alagir region of North Ossetia, and from the southern side, it may border with the Gori region of Georgia,” Dzasokhov said.
 
The North Ossetian President stressed the importance of free access to Georgia’s Black Sea port of Poti. 

In late August, Georgian State Minister for Conflict Resolution Issues Goga Khaindrava said that the Georgian side is ready to provide certain economic privileges to the firms operating in both South Ossetia and Russia’s North Ossetian Republic.

“We are also ready to grant economic privileges to the South Ossetian and North Ossetian companies in the Georgian ports, as well as on the Georgian roads. This is in the interest of Russia as well, particularly North Ossetia. This will enable those firms operating in South Ossetia to legalize their activity as well,” the Georgian State Minister said on October 27.
