Georgia Concerned over Russia’s Border Policy

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili met with Interior Security and Defense Ministers on October 19 to discuss the situation at the Georgian-Russian border, which still remains closed, Secretary of the Georgian National Security Council Gela Bezhuashvili told reporters.

“We discussed different issues, but focused on the situation at the Larsi checkpoint [at the Russo-Georgian border] which remains closed and which creates great problems for Georgia and its neighboring countries,” Gela Bezhuashvili said after the meeting.

“There are lots of cars and people waiting for the border to be reopened and the situation there is very difficult. We are waiting for the Russian side to explain [why the border remains closed],” he added.

The Larsi checkpoint was closed after the hostage-taking tragedy in Beslan, North Ossetia. It has been opened only a hand full of times, each for a short period, since then.
