Three MPs Quit Parliamentary Majority

MPs Giga Bukia, Bidzina Gujabidze and Giorgi Tsanava announced their intention today to leave the parliamentary majority, which is represented by the ruling National Movement-Democrats party.

Their protest was triggered by a refusal by the Parliament on October 12 to set up a special investigative commission to study the reasons behind the death of Georgia?s late President Zviad Gamsakhurdia.

Reportedly, 4 more MPs also wished to leave the majority; however, as opposition MP Zviad Dzidziguri claimed, ?they changed their mind due to pressure from the leadership of the parliamentary majority.?

According to Georgian Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze, who simultaneously is a member of the majority, the Parliament was not informed about the MPs? decision beforehand. ?The leadership should have been notified beforehand. This is incorrect,? Burjanadze said.

A total up to ten MPs have already quit the parliamentary majority since May.
