PACE Monitoring Delegation Visits Georgia

A delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe (PACE), led by Matyas Eorsi and Evgeni Kirilov, arrived in Georgia on July 5 for a fact-finding mission and to monitor the current situation in the country.

The delegation, which monitors implementation of the commitments  undertaken by the Georgian authorities to join the Council of Europe (CoE) in 1999, will hold meetings with Prime Minister Zurab Zhvania, Foreign Minister Salome Zourabichvili and representatives from other parliamentary factions and committees.

The PACE delegation will also visit the Adjara Autonomous Republic on July 7 in order to evaluate the post-revolutionary situation in the region.

Matyas Eorsi and Evgeni Kirilov will submit the results of their monitoring mission to the Parliamentary Assembly session in October.

Due to the political turmoil of last November, the Parliamentary Assembly instructed the Monitoring Committee in January to negotiate with the new authorities of Georgia over the new deadlines under which the Georgian government will be obliged to fulfill the commitments which Georgia undertook upon its accession to the CoE.
