Parliament Debates over Adjara’s Constitutional Powers

Georgian Parliament launched on June 25 discussion of the draft of constitutional law over distribution of powers between the Georgia’s central government and Adjara Autonomous Republic.

According to the document, which would confirm Adjara’s Autonomous status, the region will be run by the legislative body and the executive government. The President of Georgia will propose the nominee for the Adjara’s Prime Minister. The draft document also gives the Georgian Parliament right to suspend any legislative act adopted by the Adjarian Parliament.

Opponents of the draft law, including the New Rights opposition faction, as well as the Republican Party, claim that the proposed document downgrades Adjara’s autonomous rights and puts the region under the direct presidential rule.
