President’s Representatives Leave Adjara, but not Empty Handed

President’s representatives to the Adjarian port and customs left for Tbilisi on March 25 after failure to fulfill their duties in the Autonomous Republic.

Saakashvili and Abashidze reached an agreement on March 18 that would allow Tbilisi to control the port in Batumi and Adjara’s customs service, the region’s key sources of revenue, through President’s representatives in these two cash rich areas.

However, the President’s representatives were barred from fulfilling their duties, as the Adjarian leadership demanded legal base for their appointment.

“Despite problems we could obtain very important information regarding the Sarpi customs checkpoint and port of Batumi. We will inform regarding this President,” Vasil Sanodze, the President’s representative in port of Batumi told reporters on March 25.
