President’s Envoy to Kodori Gorge Retains Post

Secretary of the National Security Council Vano Merabishvili said today, President’s envoy in the Kodori Gorge, which is the only part of breakaway Abkhazia under the control of Georgia’s central authorities, Emzar Kvitsiani will retain his post.

Chief of the Kodori branch of President Saakashvili’s party National Movement Otar Gujejiani accused Kvitsiani of misuse of power and demanded his resignation.

“Although Emzar Kvitsiani was the supporter of previous authorities, the President takes into account the current difficult situation in the Kodori Gorge and will not dismiss him [Kvitsiani],” Vano Merabishvili said at a news briefing on March 8.

Emzar Kvitsiani was appointed to the post of President’s envoy during the governance of ex-President Eduard Shevardnadze.
