Georgia, Russia to Sign Border Guard Accord

Commander of the Georgian Border Guard Department Valeri Chkheidze left for Moscow today to hold talks with his Russian colleagues over the cooperation in protecting troubled Chechen section of the Russian-Georgian border.

“We will sign an agreement over exchange of information. And we are ready to further deepen this cooperation,” Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili told Russian radio station Ekho Moskvy on February 10.

Moscow wants guarantees that rebels from Chechnya will not be allowed to move through Georgia.

“We are interested in cooperation with Russia over the issue. Georgia is interested in Russia’s security. Terrorism is our common threat,” Saakashvili added.
