EU MPs Support Georgia

Members of the European Parliament (MEP) adopted on December 18 a resolution congratulating the people of Georgia for the peaceful political changes.

They argue that the EU should show determined leadership in promoting peace, stability and economic development in Georgia, as well as Azerbaijan and Armenia.

MEPs stressed that the forthcoming elections in Georgia must be fair, free and transparent and must include the peoples of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

They called on the EU to support the new Georgian authorities by providing political, financial and technical assistance to stabilize the situation, develop a strategy for reforms and prepare for the general elections.

European Parliament requested the Russian authorities to fulfill their undertaking made in 1999 to close their military bases in Georgia.

MEPs deplored the meeting held in Moscow between the leaders of the three breakaway regions of Georgia and urged Russia to play a constructive role aimed at defusing tension, facilitating dialogue and supporting Georgia’s integrity and sovereignty.

In view of the economic collapse of Georgia, Parliament expressed its grave concern for the health and wellbeing of the people Georgia and called on the Commission to submit proposals for emergency aid for heating, electrical power, food and medicine.
