Abashidze Announced State of Emergency in Adjara

In the wake of Eduard Shevardnadze’s resignation, Adjarian leader Aslan Abashidze announced on November 23 state of emergency in Adjara Autonomous Republic for a 30 day term.

Abashidze was Shevardnadze’s ally during the political crisis, which sparked in Georgia after fraudulent November 2 parliamentary elections.

“We should protect constitutional system in the Autonomous Republic, this would be the only right decision,” Aslan Abashidze said.

He condemned bloodless revolution, which led to Shevardnadze’s resignation and said that it “was anti-constitutional.”
