Sabotage at “Borjomi” Factory

(Tbilisi, September 6, 2003, Civil Georgia) – One of the pipes of the factory, which produces mineral water “Borjomi” in the western Georgian town of Borjomi, was damaged as a result of sabotage on September 5.
 
“One of the main pipes outside the factory, through which we receive water, has been deliberately damaged. Although, the damage has not caused water pollution, water supply and production of “Borjomi” was temporarily ceased. However, at the moment, the factory receives water from a reserve pipe,” Mamuka Khazaradze, the president of !
the Georgian Glass and Mineral Waters Company (GGMWC), which produces “Borjomi”, told Civil Georgia on September 6.
 
According to the unofficial reports unknown persons poured allegedly poisoning liquid in the water reservoir of the factory, causing water pollution. However, chief of the GGMWC Mamuka Khazaradze said there is no threat of poisoning as the factory has an alternative sources of water.

Borjomi mineral water springs are the greatest natural assets of Georgia. Borjomi valley is a ‘raw material’ stock for several largest companies in Georgia engaged in bottling and selling the natural spring waters. GGMWC is the biggest among them.

At present the water is sold in 25 countries, with water producing companies bringing the millions of dollars to the country and employing the thousands of local population of Borjomi Valley.
