UES Demands Guarantees to Supply Tbilisi with Electricity

(Tbilisi, September 5, 2003, Civil Georgia) – Russia’s state-owned Unified Energy System (UES) is ready to supply Tbilisi with electricity, if it receives guarantees that it will reach the capital, the spokesperson for UES, Tatiana Milyaeva, said yesterday.

“Frequent outages of the electricity supply in Tbilisi and a number of other regions of the country, have been caused by the inability of Georgia’s distribution company [which is responsible for electricity transmission] to transmit energy through the te!
rritory of Georgia,” the UES spokesperson stated.

UES purchased a 75 percent stake in the Telasi electricity distribution facility from the U.S. company AES in early August.

Presently the capital city of Tbilisi and other regions of Georgia are facing an energy crisis due to debts incurred to the Wholesale Electricity Market by the previous owner of Telasi as well as frequent damage done to the power lines.
